A Birthday Staycation After 14 Years Away from KL
I was originally from Kuala Lumpur, but after living in Johor Bahru for more than 14 years, KL somehow feels unfamiliar to me now.
New highways, new malls, new cafés, and so many new places appeared over the years. Every time I return, it feels like rediscovering the city all over again. What used to feel normal during my younger days now feels exciting and fresh.
Recently, I planned a 4 Days 3 Nights birthday staycation for my wife around Kuala Lumpur, Petaling Jaya, and Damansara. Instead of rushing through tourist attractions, we focused more on relaxing stays, cafés, shopping malls, food hunting, and spending quality time together.
Honestly, planning a KL trip nowadays is not easy. Traffic routes changed, parking became more confusing, and there are simply too many choices everywhere. So I decided to document this itinerary in hopes that it may help others plan a smoother and more enjoyable KL holiday.

Day 1 • Damansara & PJ Relaxing Start
We started the journey early in the morning with breakfast at Eco Botanic, Iskandar Puteri, Johor before driving up to Kuala Lumpur.
Our first proper stop was lunch at Putien in Sunway Pyramid. The food was comforting and not too heavy, which was perfect before walking around the Big Baby Expo happening inside the mall. Even if you are not shopping for baby items, expos in KL nowadays are surprisingly huge and interesting to explore.
After that, we made a quick dessert stop for Thai Fried Banana at IOI Damansara Mall before heading to our first hotel (Airbnb), Paxtonz Empire City.

Empire City has changed so much compared to years ago. The area now feels more alive with lifestyle shops and activities nearby. After resting for a while, we headed to Hextar World for shopping and dinner before ending the night early.
The first day was intentionally slow-paced because KL traffic can already be tiring enough.
Day 2 • Birthday Celebration in Bukit Bintang
The second day was the main birthday celebration.
We checked into Pavilion Hotel Kuala Lumpur, which I personally think is one of the best locations for staycations if you enjoy shopping and city walking. Everything is nearby and convenient.
The day started with a slow brunch before heading back to the hotel for high tea. Sometimes, simple things like sitting down for tea and desserts together become the most memorable moments during a trip.
Later in the afternoon, my wife went for a massage session while I took some time to rest.
For dinner, we had a cozy meal at Courtyard inside Pavilion Hotel. After dinner, we walked around Pavilion KL and nearby malls around Bukit Bintang.
What surprised me most was how much Bukit Bintang changed over the years. It feels more modern, more crowded, and honestly more international now compared to the KL I remembered many years ago.
Still, the familiar energy of KL nightlife remains the same.
Day 3 • Old KL Exploration
On the third day, we slowed things down again and explored the older side of Kuala Lumpur.
After breakfast and check-out, we headed to Petaling Street for this Michelin Star Lai Foong Lala Noodles. Chinatown still carries that nostalgic KL feeling that many newer places cannot replace.
From there, we visited REXKL and Central Market. REXKL especially impressed me because it transformed an old cinema into a modern creative space filled with bookstores, cafés, and local art culture.

Next was Tangga.kl at Jalan Sin Chew Kee, one of the more aesthetic café spots hidden within old KL streets.
This part of the trip probably felt the most meaningful to me personally. Walking through old KL while seeing how much the city evolved over the years gave me mixed feelings of nostalgia and unfamiliarity at the same time.
We ended the day with dinner at Big Eye Restaurant before heading back to rest at our Serdang family House.
Day 4 • Heading Home
The final day was simple and relaxing.
After breakfast, we met up with family for lunch before driving back towards Johor Bahru.
As tiring as KL traffic can be, this short staycation reminded me why KL still feels special to me. Even after 14 years away, the city still has its own charm, especially when explored slowly instead of rushing through attractions.
Final Thoughts
If you are planning a short KL staycation, my biggest advice is:
Don’t overpack your itinerary.
KL itself is already exhausting enough with traffic, parking, and crowds. Leave enough room to rest, café hop, and simply enjoy the moment.
This itinerary worked well for us because it balanced food, shopping, hotel stays, and slow exploration without feeling too rushed.
Hopefully this sharing helps others plan a better and more enjoyable Kuala Lumpur holiday itinerary too.
